Working Group for Hypnotherapy Request Final Vote

February 6, 2008

Late yesterday afternoon, the Working Group for Hypnotherapy sent out their request for a final vote on the draft hypnotherapy Code of Ethics.

They asked all their registered hypnotherapists to read the final draft and to vote on whether or not to adopt the draft code, using one of the following options:

Yes to adopt the code
No I reject the code
I abstain

The vote requires a two thirds majority to agree to the code, which will then be taken up by the Working Group, meaning that all its members should then follow its guidelines.  Their members incorporate over 4000 hypnotherapists in the UK.

The final draft has been changed in three main ways.  Firstly, the reference to CRB checks has been dropped because ‘there is no longer a sensible way for a self-employed hypnotherapist to obtain a CRB check’.  As mentioned in our earlier article, if you are a member of the XXX then you can apply for one through them, but the Working Group for Hypnotherapy cannot endorse any one particular organisation and so it seems right to drop the reference for now.  Hopefully, the Working Group and other hypnotherapy organisations will petition for a change so that we can obtain regular CRB checks for the reassurance of clients.

Secondly, the mention of ASA guidelines (Advertising Standards Agency) has been removed because of legal and professional issues.  It isn’t stated exactly what these are, but a suitable alternative clause has been added.

Thirdly, they have updated a clause to incorporate complying with the Data Protection Act.

The final draft can be viewed online.  The ballot closes on 5th March and the results are expected soon afterwards.
