Using Hypnosis for Weight Loss

December 4, 2007

Hypnotherapy can help significantly with weight loss, but it is not a miracle. This article looks at how hypnosis works to increase weight loss.

Controlling or avoiding weight gain is one of the hot topics in today’s society. Indeed, too much extra weight can increase your chances of a host of serious health issues such as coronary disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and some cancers. If you already have such a medical condition, that extra weight can contribute to extra complications.

Luckily, even a small weight loss can improve your symptoms and your general health significantly. However, more than one or two of us struggle with losing weight.

Hypnotherapy is an alternative treatment for weight loss that is still relatively unknown. Many people don’t realise how it can help and don’t understand the role that the unconscious plays when we try to lose weight.

It is important to find a qualified hypnotherapist. There is no single governing body in the United Kingdom so it’s important to check the training he/she has received, any professional bodies to which they belong and the code of conduct they abide by.

Some hypnotherapists will do a single, extended session although the success of this can depend on the client. Many unconscious issues making it difficult for the client to lose weight are similar for many people and so one session is sometimes all it takes.

Hypnosis alone cannot make you lose weight, so it’s important to decide how you want to approach your weight loss. Many people choose a diet system, such as Weight Watchers or Slimming World, but lack the motivation to stay on the diet. Hypnosis can help with the motivation. Other people simply choose to make healthier food choices, but find it hard to resist a certain food type. Hypnosis can help discover what need that food type is fulfilling and fulfil that need in another way, allowing the client to stay on the right track.

Sometimes the issue lies a little deeper. Clients can lose weight, but after a certain amount of weight loss, they seem to ‘self-sabotage.’ Hypnosis can help identify the reasons for this and change the unconscious patterns that have been set over the years.

Hypnosis is just a way to allow a person to communicate with their unconscious mind, it is the facilitator to allow you to have the confidence and motivation to lose weight. You cannot expect to continue as you have been and to lose weight. It is not a miracle cure, so you will still need to consume fewer calories than you expend. Hypnotherapy simply helps to remove any mental blocks in your path to make the process easier.
