Use Self-Hypnosis To Relieve Hayfever

A study in Switzerland in 2005 suggested that hypnosis may help hayfever sufferers. 66 regular sufferers were given a two hour session with a hypnotherapist and either taught self-hypnosis or asked to talk about their symptoms.

The ones taught self-hypnosis were given a guided imagery to a safe place, taught to induce this light trance themselves and asked to use self-hypnosis as their first port of call instead of intervention treatment.

The only issue with an experiment of this kind is that it could not be blind, so subjects had to be aware of which group they were in.

The self-hypnosis group reported fewer symptoms, such as a runny nose, increased nasal airflow and less doses of conventional treatment were required. It is believed this could be due to increased level of blood flow during the hypnosis.

However, the study was relatively small and the results were not statistically strong. Mike Matthews of Allergy UK and a GP who has researched hypnotherapy, said that you can control the blood flow through a part of the body
