Should Hypnosis Be Used To Remove Pain?

December 29, 2007

Following on from our earlier article about Using Hypnosis To Relieve Physical Symptoms, it raises the question about whether hypnotherapists should use hypnosis to relieve pain.

Many cancer sufferers seek help from hypnotherapists to cope with the pain. Relieving pain is one of the lesser known skills of the hypnotherapist.

There is always this danger when removing or relieving physical symptoms and the responsibility must lie with the hypnotherapist to ensure that clients seek the proper medical attention and treatment. Hypnosis should not be used to remove pain completely or there is the danger that physical ailments could go unnoticed and even worsen through neglect. Unfortunate though it may be, pain is there for a reason, it is our body’s way of telling us there is a problem.

It is important during Hypnotherapy to ensure that we know and understand why the pain is there. Occasionally, for psychological reasons, pain can persist when the ailment has indeed been cured because the pain has become a habit and embedded itself within our unconscious. At other times, the pain is unavoidable and the client needs just a little relief from the pain
