Self-Hypnosis: Isn’t It Just Meditation?

December 22, 2007

Hypnotherapists often promote the benefits of self-hypnosis and many teach it to their clients so that they can reinforce the work done during their sessions.

Many misunderstand the difference between self-hypnosis and meditation. Meditation is a form of hypnosis, sometimes using guided imagery, for the purposes of relaxation, however, hypnosis is driven by suggestion.

Whether you receive Hypnotherapy or use self-hypnosis, it is generally done with the purpose of achieving some specific outcome through suggestion.

There is also a difference shown in brain scans, EEG’s and other feedback in studies. People who practice both even keep them separate.

Self-hypnosis can take a while to learn and to achieve and it is not related to how intelligent you are. Sometimes people find it easier to use a tape to help them achieve hypnosis and then they can work on their suggestions or outcomes. It can take a few weeks practice to learn to be passive in order to achieve the hypnotic state and yet to remain active enough to work on your outcome.
