N-SHAP Hypnotherapist Supervisors Course
November 24, 2007
Hypnotherapy within the UK is unregulated with no governing body and as such, Continuous Personal Development (CPD) and on-going professional supervision is not yet compulsory.
Many hypnotherapists are a member of one or more of the national councils and bodies, of which there are more than 20 in the UK, and many of these do encourage CPD and indeed many have voluntary codes which include or cater for personal development.
Most regulated therapies, such as psychotherapy, have a compulsory element of supervision as well as continuous personal development. This may include ensuring that the therapist has their own ‘therapist’, often referred to as a supervisor. This supervisor will be an experienced therapist, usually with a minimum number of years in full time practice, and will be someone for the therapist to speak to in confidence with regards to their own personal issues and also any particularly difficult client cases.
The National School of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy (N-SHAP), together with the Cambridge College of Hypnotherapy, run several hypnotherapy CPD courses and their 2008 schedule has now been released.
One of these courses is to train hypnotherapists who wish to become supervisors. The National Council for Hypnotherapy supports N-SHAP and the CCH in this important element of our profession. The next course starts on April 4th 2008 in London and costs £650. To qualify, you must have been practising for a minimum of five years and hypnotherapists from all areas of the UK are encouraged to apply.
As hypnotherapy moves towards regulation, CPD and professional, ethical supervision is something that we will all need to incorporate and most hypnotherapists will welcome.
