I Wasn’t Hypnotised, I Heard Every Word!
December 20, 2007
If I had a pound for every time I’d overheard this before training as a hypnotherapist, I’d be a millionaire! This is something clients will rarely mention to their therapist so it is important it is highlighted during the initial appointment.
There are different levels of hypnosis and some people find it more difficult to achieve hypnosis than others, however, with a hypnotherapist they feel comfortable with and the right induction, everyone can achieve hypnosis to one degree or another.
Not everyone can achieve the ‘deep sleep’ hypnotic state often promoted in the media, and depending on the issue they want resolving, in many cases the hypnotherapist may not even want you to. Clients simply believe they should ‘feel’ hypnotised because of the media’s portrayal of hypnosis.
Most people will hear most of what the hypnotherapist said. Alternatively, some people believe they heard it all and in fact they didn’t. As one hypnotherapist explained, “It doesn’t matter if your conscious mind heard everything, I wasn’t talking to you. I was talking to your unconscious mind and your unconscious heard every word.”
The effects of the hypnosis will prove it, not how deeply you experienced the hypnotic state.
