Hypnotherapy for Chronic Pain
November 30, 2007
Alternative therapies will never and should never be a replacement for conventional medicine and treatment. However, with increasing awareness of the mind body connection and the role emotions play in many medical disorders, certain therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotional Freedom Therapy (EFT) and hypnotherapy are becoming a core addition to medical care, including the treatment of pain.
The medical establishment does not always have the time to give a patient the level of investigation sometimes required and is now taking steps to remedy this. The NHS now has the NHS Directory of Complementary and Alternative Practitioners and a GP can refer patients to certain alternative therapies when considered necessary.
H. Ray Wooten, an Associate Professor at St Mary’s University in Texas, has provided an interesting case study from one of his patients, utilising Heart-Centred Hypnotherapy and EFT. This particular case study is dealing with chronic pain and although not a typical case, does show how sometimes care needs to incorporate treatment on an emotional, mental and physical basis.
