Hypnotherapy? ..Could I Lose Control?
November 17, 2007
This is a common Hypnotherapy myth and the answer is a resounding ‘no’. Hypnosis is a very natural state, one which we enter all the time, often several times a day. When you’re daydreaming, when you’re lying in bed and you’re not quite awake yet but not asleep either, when you’re engrossed in a film or a good book, when you suddenly realise that you’ve been driving for the last two miles and can’t really remember doing it – all of these times are examples of when you’ve been in hypnosis.
Hypnosis is a relaxed, mental state and is actually a really nice feeling. Hypnotherapy is when a hypnotherapist works with a client to encourage that state to happen for therapeutic benefits.
During hypnotherapy, the therapist cannot make a client do or believe anything that would go against the client’s wishes. This is probably a subject that will be touched upon time and time again. Some of you are probably thinking ‘But what about those stage hypnotists then?’ What you need to remember is that the volunteers used in these stage acts are exactly that – volunteers. They willingly volunteered to take part. So the answer is no, you won’t, and in fact can’t, lose control. See The Big Difference: Stage Hypnotist vs Hypnotherapist for more information
