Hypnotherapist Cures 45 Year Dentist Phobia
December 11, 2007
Two hypnotherapy sessions have transformed 52 year old Sharon from a quivering wreck at the thought of seeing a dentist to visiting the dentist on an overnight stay to remove all her teeth – and without painkillers.
Sharon was unable to talk about her fear without shaking from head to foot and so her first hypnotherapy session with hypnotherapist Olivia Roberts had to concentrate upon calming her down so she could have an effective second session. By the end of the first appointment, Sharon was able to talk calmly about her phobia.
In the second session, Olivia regressed Sharon to an incident when she was five years old, when her fear started with the gas mask that dentists used to use and the horrible smell. In hypnosis, this experience was changed to a more comfortable one by imagining the mask was made of chocolate and had a lovely chocolate smell.
Another inhibiting memory was of pain from the needle, so Olivia used two techniques to help with both making the memory more comfortable and also to help with future dentistry work. The first was glove anaesthesia, a common pain control method in hypnotherapy, and the other was nerve switching, which is when the client imagines a panel of switches that control the nerves and they can imagine switching these off until the pain has stopped.
Despite being initially sceptical of hypnotherapy, Sharon is now delighted with the result and has had her teeth removed without painkillers.
Olivia Roberts is a hypnotherapist based in Bournemouth. She specializes in migraine, IBS and asthma and runs Hypnotherapy Inspiration.
