Hypnosis And Needlephobics

February 3, 2008

hypnosis needle phobiaIf you’re afraid of needles, then those injections so important to our health can become a real nightmare.  Nobody likes having needles, but if you’re afraid of needles then it can put you off tropical holidays and necessary vaccinations.

This phobia affects 1 in 10 of the UK population and is commonly set off by a childhood experience.  Many people avoid injections and needles as much as possible, but when it becomes absolutely necessary they can experience real fear, begin to shake and sweat and sometimes faint.

There are methods to help ease the burden.  Some have a coping strategy such as not looking at the needle, holding tightly to a childhood teddy or lucky charm or even taking inhalers.

This is one phobia that many people just put up and live with, after all, it’s not too often when they need to have an injection, but what happens if you are diagnosed as type 1 diabetic and need an injection up to four times a day?  With today’s diet and lifestyle, diabetes is on the increase.

Hypnosis can help with phobias and needles is usually a fairly easy one to deal with.  In some cases, the phobia is removed entirely, leaving the client as able to take a needle as the rest of us.  Some people prefer to use self-hypnosis as it gives them a greater feeling of control.  A hypnotherapist can teach self-hypnosis so the client can use the techniques whenever they’re needed.
