As I was driving home last night, I heard Paul McKenna on Radio 1 DJ Scott Mill’s show. Scott was asking for McKenna’s thoughts on past life regression and why people always seem to say that they were somebody famous, or rich, or someone important and never that they were just a peasant.

Paul McKenna’s response was that when he used to hear about past life regression, he’d always thought it was a load of rubbish, but that every now and then someone would come up with facts that they couldn’t possibly have known or they would start speaking in a foreign language that they couldn’t have known.

However, McKenna also said that what really interested him was forward progression, which is when you ask someone to look into the future, to see what would happen if they continued on a particular path, or even to ask them to look into a future life, if you believe in reincarnation. He called it a ‘snapshot of a person’s karma’.

Forward progression isn’t something that I’ve used or experienced, so I can’t really say, so I looked it up. It is otherwise known as ‘age progression’ or ‘future life progression hypnosis’ and there are very few hypnotherapists or courses about it and it’s a relatively new technique.

Forward progression is a technique sometimes used in NLP or life coaching, but progressing through the current life only. Clients are asked to imagine what is likely to happen if they continue down their current path and are encouraged to really use their imagination and give as much detail as possible.

Personally, I don’t know how imaginative or detailed I could be if I was asked to use this technique for myself but it’s an interesting concept and we’d be interested to hear from anyone who either uses this technique in their own practice, runs courses or has experienced it for themselves as a client.

Why do hypnotherapists and psychotherapists use regression therapy?

Whenever someone has a problem, have you noticed how people seem to say that the problem must have originated in their childhood? Although it may or may not be true, we are all responsible for our actions now, in our daily lives, we all know right from wrong.

However, if you cannot lose weight, no matter how hard you try, is it possible that the issue lies deeper? It’s not as simple as ‘it’s wrong to eat that bar of chocolate so don’t do it’. Similarly, if someone has a phobia or a fear that seems irrational or starts at a later stage in life, they can’t help feeling that fear and although we may not understand it, we cannot make a person see something through our eyes.

The American Chronicle has an interesting article about the theory behind regression and past life regression. Sometimes understanding why a person has a phobia or problem, regardless of whether we believe the experience really came from recalling a suppressed memory or seeing a past life, can help free someone from their issue – and that is why they visited the hypnotherapist in the first place. There is more and more clinical research on hypnosis, showing its benefits and that it works, even though we cannot prove why. Sometimes a method just works – and surely that is all that matters.

In our earlier article Does Hypnosis Prove Existence of Aliens and UFO’s? we discussed how UFO investigator and hypnotist David Coggins firmly believes that his regressions under hypnosis prove the existence of alien life forms and their presence here on earth.

Hypnotherapist Tom Connelly is a Fellow of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis. In one of his articles, he expresses his alarm when clients have mentioned experiences of the sort described by David Coggins.

However, Tom Connelly has a different theory. He believes these experiences are actually birth trauma. Is it possible that under hypnosis we can relive our birth and mistakenly believe it to be an alien abduction? After all, we are being taken from one environment into a new, strange one and we are unable to describe it and understand what is happening.

How then does that fit in with David Coggin’s experiences with those who have had one or two days ‘lost’ from their memory? Is it possible that these clients are unable to recall what happened to them and when regressed, search out a previous memory that will fit? Presumably, those who visit David Coggins may already believe they have been abducted as this is the only explanation that appears to fit. Indeed, by visiting someone who describes himself as a UFO investigator, does that not straight away give a suggestion to which we are susceptible to under hypnosis?

Many hypnotherapists may have experienced similar happenings. Personally, I have used regression techniques but have yet to experience something like this with one of my own clients.

A UFO investigator from South Wales is featured today is the South Wales Echo, claiming that he hypnotises people who cannot remember periods of their life.

The 67 year old investigator, David Coggins, of Pontypridd says that during hypnotic regression these people recall sighting of the crafts, visiting them and being medically examined.

You can read the complete article online. Whether or not this proves the existence remains to be seen. We are given no information on Mr Coggins qualifications in hypnosis and it is implied in the article that these people do not remember recounting their stories but are played the recorded session afterwards.

Most people do remember their hypnosis sessions, there is no reason why they shouldn’t. Also, during hypnosis, people become very imaginative and are open to suggestion, which is why guided imagery can be very useful for therapeutic reasons. Therefore, this evidence for UFO’s cannot be relied upon, in the same way that hypnotised witnesses testimonies cannot be used in court.

Actor Brian Cox, of X-Men, Troy and The Bourne Supremacy, has revealed to the Sunday Mail he was a knight in a past life. Under hypnosis, Brian found himself dressed in armour in front of a flag he didn’t recognise.

It was only nearly three years later, on a visit to a Russian museum with his daughter, that he saw the flag again. The flag was the flag of the Knights Templar, who guarded the Holy Grail during the Baltic period.

Past Life Regression is a specialist subject offered by some hypnotherapists but there are many theories behind what it is. Some people believe that it is real and that it proves reincarnation. Others simply believe that the mind creates images or remembers things it has seen previously. There are some who believe that our mind is accessing the Akashic Records, a sort of library on another plane that contains all the records of human existence and experiences.

Brian admits he is an agnostic and doesn’t really believe in anything, yet this experience has fascinated him.

Whatever the explanation, there have been some very interesting stories and experiences of past life regression with people and even children reporting facts and figures that they could not have known.
